Seeking counselling can feel daunting. At HCC, we aim to make the process as clear and supportive as possible.
We provide psychodynamic counselling both face-to-face at our Highgate Village centre and online, helping you explore emotional and relationship difficulties in a safe, confidential, accredited space. Our counsellors work with you to understand patterns, navigate challenges, and support your wellbeing.
We offer both short-term and long-term individual psychodynamic counselling.
Short-term counselling consists of 12 sessions. This focused work can help you address specific difficulties, gain new perspective, or navigate a particular challenge or life transition.
Long-term counselling runs for up to 2 years. This deeper therapeutic work provides space to explore more complex or longstanding issues, helping you understand recurring patterns and develop lasting change.
During your initial consultation, we’ll discuss which approach might be most helpful for you.
We provide family and couples counselling for families and people in two person relationships experiencing relational difficulties. We welcome all couples irrespective of the status, orientation or origin of the relationship. Couples counselling is not only for those in a romantic relationship.
Our couples counselling aims to help both parties feel heard and supported as you navigate challenges together. The length and structure of couples’ work is discussed at your initial consultation based on your specific circumstances.
Getting started
Practical information about starting counselling
The support we offer
Counselling is available both face-to-face at our Highgate village centre and online via secure video.
Individual counselling involves meeting with a counsellor on a weekly basis for 50 minutes, either for 12 sessions or for up to 2 years.
Couples counselling usually involves both parties meeting with one or two counsellors, once a fortnight or once a month. This is for up to six sessions initially, which is then reviewed with the counsellor.
Family counselling is appropriate when there is an identified family problem that the family wish to work through together. Family members meet with a small team of counsellors, usually on a monthly basis.
Is counselling for me?
We offer an initial consultation to everyone considering counselling with us. This session lasts 90 minutes to 2 hours, and is an opportunity for you to ask any questions about counselling and the centre. It’s also a chance for us to learn about you, your circumstances and your needs, and to establish together whether HCC can offer you suitable support.
Before booking an initial consultation, you’ll need to complete some registration forms.
Once we better understand your needs, we can refer you to a suitable counsellor to begin the counselling process. Individual counselling then involves meeting with your counsellor on a weekly basis for 50-minute sessions.
How we work
We carefully consider the allocation of each client with a suitable counsellor. This consideration is about finding the most likely therapeutic fit for each client and not about contribution level or availability. We believe this thoughtful approach makes a significant difference to the therapeutic work.
All contributions towards the cost of sessions are agreed at your initial consultation, based on your income before tax. Our goal is to ensure finances don’t become a barrier to getting the support you need.
How much does counselling cost?
Individual counselling: We use a sliding scale based on your monthly income before tax to determine a suitable contribution.
Couples and family counselling: Contributions are determined by individual circumstances, taking into account that more than one person is involved.
All contributions are agreed at your initial consultation to ensure they’re sustainable for you.
Can I have counselling in my first language?
Our counsellors can speak and work in a number of different languages. Please make it known to us and we can discuss this with you.

Where Our Clients Come From
People access counselling with Highgate Counselling Centre from across North London and nearby boroughs, including Haringey, Camden, Islington, Hackney, Barnet and beyond. We provide both face-to-face sessions in Highgate Village and secure online sessions, so clients can be supported regardless of where they live.
Training and Counselling at HCC
Due to potential conflicts of interest, we cannot offer counselling to individuals who are currently trainees of HCC. If you are receiving counselling with HCC and later wish to apply for one of our training programmes, counselling would need to end before beginning training, within an appropriate timeframe. This can be discussed during the application process.
