Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT)

Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT) is a time limited and structured psychotherapy, typically delivered over 16 weekly sessions.  It aims to help the client understand the connection between presenting symptoms and what is happening in his/her relationships through identifying a core repetitive pattern of relating that can be traced back to childhood.  Once this pattern is identified, it is be used to make sense of difficulties in relationships in the here-and-now that contribute to psychological stress. Diagnosis and Medication

The aim of the workshop is to provide participants with an overview of common mental health conditions, together with an exploration of the range of medications prescribed for some of these conditions. We will also explore some of the side effects of some of these medications.

In addition, we will explore mental health as a continuum and discuss when to make a referral to a mental health professional. Finally, we will also examine the social and cultural impact on mental health.

Assessment

The first meeting between a client and a psychodynamic counsellor may be one of the most significant occasions in the client’s life. This one-day workshop aims to set out how such a meeting is conducted, the information to be gathered and what happens next.

The training will give participants ample opportunity to find out about and discuss the above as well as other issues relating to assessment and to prepare, in small groups, information following assessment.

Transference and Countertransference

In this workshop we will explore the meaning of transference and how we think about the dynamic and its meaning, between counsellor and client. How do we recognise the transference and the different shapes it takes? How do we observe the communication from our clients, the way in which they bring themselves, how they speak and act with us? How do we listen to our clients? Our clients’ stories tell us about patterns and experiences which may refer to the kind of object-relationship we can expect to be representative in our dynamic in the room – both positive and negative. Setting up in Private Practice

Making the transition from either training or agency work into private practice can seem daunting to begin with. This one-day workshop aims to de-mystify the process, and to provide participants with some practical tools in making this transition.

The workshop is highly interactive and will provide participants with ample opportunities to find out about the above and to explore other issues that are related to the establishment of a successful private practice.

Mentalisation Based Treatment

Mentalisation Based Treatment (MBT) is psychodynamically-orientated and has been manualised with a focus in helping people to understand their own thoughts and feelings and why they do what they do and to help people to understand what others might be thinking and feeling and how come they might behave in the ways that they do.

The workshop is as an introduction to MBT and is not designed to enable participants to practice MBT. However, it will give you some new ways of thinking about your own work and aims to complement your existing skill set.
