What to expect at an initial consultation session

It can be daunting to attend an initial consultation if you haven’t done anything like this before and are unsure what to expect. This is an opportunity for both you and HCC to explore if counselling at HCC might be helpful.

You can expect to be asked what brings you to seek counselling, and also some background history. Following this, you might feel counselling is not for you, or it is not the right time for you. Equally, HCC have a duty of care to discuss with you if we believe the type of counselling we offer might not be most helpful for you. In such circumstances we will do our best to signpost you to a more appropriate support or somewhere that is better placed to help you to find somewhere that could be more appropriate than HCC.

Below are a few pointers and guidelines which might be helpful.

The whole process of being allocated a counsellor to do ongoing work can take approximately 4-6 weeks, though in some cases it can be quicker.

The counsellor you see for your initial consultation is unlikely to be the counsellor you see for ongoing counselling.

Your initial consultation takes
90 minutes to 2 hours.

Please arrive for your appointment on time, as we are unable to extend appointments. If you arrive early, there is a small waiting room you can sit in.

You can expect to be asked what it is that brings you to seek counselling, and also some background history, so that we can begin to build up a picture of what has brought you to where you are currently.

Please come alone to the appointment. It is important you are seen alone for your initial consultation as this is how you will be with your counsellor when you begin counselling.

We are also not able to permit any pets or children in the centre.

You will be asked when you can commit to weekly appointments for counselling. Please have a think prior to your appointment when you are available.

If you are unable to attend your Initial Consultation, please let us know more than 48 working hours before the appointment, otherwise we will not be able to rearrange the time without a further charge.
