We are the longest standing
registered charity offering counselling
services in the UK.
As a charity, we’re committed to providing counselling that’s within everyone’s reach, whatever their income. This mission drives everything we do, informing our decisions so that financial barriers never prevent us from offering affordable counselling and accessible training face to face in North London and online.
“It is important to HCC that what we offer is of high-quality. We are small enough to be able to take the time to understand what each individual is coming to our door for, whether they are a counselling client, a volunteer or a prospective trainee. This means really comprehending what brings a client to counselling to ensure we are offering a suitable service with an appropriate counsellor. It also means keeping our training classes small, so we know each of our trainees are known personally to us, ensuring we offer support and directly encourage individual development. Essentially what I am saying is, we are a community and in a community each person and their unique needs matter.” ———-Natasha Harrison, Director
Are you seeking support with your mental health?
HCC carefully considers which counsellor would be most suitable for each client. This is not based on the contribution level a client is paying nor do we just place clients with a next available counsellor. HCC believes it is highly important to consider the right fit of a counsellor to each of our clients.
We offer:
- Long-term (up to 2 years) individual psychodynamic counselling
- Short-term (12 sessions) psychodynamic counselling
- Couples Counselling
- Family Counselling
Is counselling for me?
We begin with an initial consultation where you can ask questions and we can understand your circumstances and needs. This helps us work out together whether counselling with HCC is right for you.
How much counselling costs?
All contributions towards the cost of the counselling sessions are agreed at the point of your initial consultation. Contributions are agreed based on income before tax.

Are you interested in a counselling career?
We offer training at every level, from introductory certificates through to our established diploma in psychodynamic counselling, plus regular CPD events for training and qualified counsellors and therapists. Below you’ll find an overview of each programme. For full details, visit the individual course pages. If you’d prefer to discuss which training is right for you, please email training@highgatecounselling.org.uk
HCC considers it important to keep training groups small to ensure all trainees can be supported in their individual development. We also offer all of our trainees their placement in-house together with clinical supervision so that they do not have to source a placement elsewhere to complete their required clinical hours to qualify. If you are considering applying for training, you are encouraged to apply early to avoid disappointment. Training groups are generally oversubscribed.
Overview
- 1 year Certificate in Counselling Skills (1 weekday evening September – July)
- 6 months online Fast-Track Certificate in Counselling Skills (2 weekday evenings January – July)
Our certificates offer a rich learning experience of the core skills to understand and apply basic concepts of counselling.
This is not a psychodynamic course, like our diploma, but rather a pluralistic approach. The course also provides skills practice required to facilitate a helping relationship and valuable space for personal exploration and self-reflection.
Both these trainings are an equivalent of a level 3 and accepted as prerequisite for a level 4.
- Diploma in Pyschodynamic Counselling (BACP Accredited since 1994)
- 2 year and 1 term long with classes taking place twice weekday evenings and some Saturdays workshops
HCC has a strong reputation for its long-standing delivery of the 2 year (level 4) diploma training in Psychodynamic Counselling accredited by the BACP.
The Diploma has 4 main components:
- Psychodynamic theory and concepts
- Counselling skills practice
- Supervised clinical placement in HCC’s clinic
- Trainees are also required to be in personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy for the duration of their training.
HCC offers all its trainees a placement to complete their required clinical hours to qualify, in addition to providing a place in a clinical supervision group throughout their training.
- We run a changing programme of workshops exploring clinical practice, theoretical developments, and professional skills throughout the year
- Most sessions take place on Saturdays, both online and face-to-face.
We offer regular continuing professional development workshops throughout the year, both online and face-to-face, covering topics such as diagnosis and medication, working with suicidality and risk, psychosexuality, and ethical dilemmas in therapeutic work. We keep groups small to ensure meaningful discussion and personal attention.
Check our CPD page for the latest offering.
To maintain appropriate professional boundaries, current counselling clients of HCC are not eligible to attend our CPD workshops.
